Who We Are
The Local Government Council is established under section 15.2-4200 of the Code of Virginia as one of 21 planning districts which serve the local governments of the Commonwealth. The Local Government Council works to provide services for member localities and identify and develop opportunities for coordination among the region's local governments.
Areas where the Local Government Council is active in Region 2000 include:
- Transportation Planning
- Grants and Infrastructure Development and Administration
- Support for economic and workforce development initiatives
- Land Use Planning
- GIS and mapping
- Data research
- Regional Service Initiatives
What We Do
The Local Government Council provides a variety of services to local governments in Planning District 11 including:
- Conduct studies on issues and problems of regional significance;
- Identify and study potential opportunities for local cost savings and staffing efficiencies through coordinated local government efforts;
- Identify mechanisms for the coordination of state and local interests on a regional basis;
- Implement services upon request of member localities;
- Provide technical assistance to state government and member localities;
- Serve as a liaison between localities and state agencies as requested;
- Review local government aid applications as required by applicable law;
- Conduct strategic planning for the region as required by applicable law;
- Develop regional functional area plans as deemed necessary by the commission or as requested by member localities;
- Assist state agencies, as requested, in the development of substate plans;
- Participate in a statewide geographic information system, the Virginia Geographic Information Network, as directed by the Department of Planning and Budget; and
- Collect and maintain demographic, economic, and other data, acting as a state data center affiliate in cooperation with the Virginia Employment Commission.

Meetings
The Local Government Council meets at 5:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of January, April, July and October. Periodically we move the meetings to different parts of the region so contact the Council to find out meeting locations.
