Seven Region 2000 localities awarded Transportation Enhancement Grants

Funds to be used for sidewalks, walking trails, park improvements and more

The Commonwealth Transportation Board announced on June 18, 2009 more than $1.4 million in Transportation Enhancement Grants for seven Region 2000 communities, including the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford, the counties of Amherst and Appomattox, and the towns of Altavista, Amherst, and Brookneal.

Over the next two years these funds will provide new downtown streetscape improvements, new sidewalks, new walking and biking trails, and improvements to parks and a historic train station.

Virginia's Region 2000 Local Government Council assisted with grant applications and research for four of the projects totaling $575,000.

The funds will be used for the following projects:

Town of Brookneal $  106,000 Phase II - Downtown Streetscape Improvements
Town of Altavista $  250,000 Downtown Streetscape Improvements
County of Appomattox $  135,000 Appomattox Heritage & Recretational Trail
City of Bedford $    90,000 Phase III - Centertown Master Plan
County of Amherst $  347,000 Restoration of Amherst Train Station
County of Amherst $  225,000 Riveredge Park, Madison Heights
City of Lynchburg $  208,519 Riverside Park Pedestrian/Bike Connections
Total $1,445,519
