Amherst County

Coolwell Park& Community Center—This park has a picnic area with grills, a play area for children, restrooms, lighted all-purpose fields (soccer, football, and softball), outdoor basketball courts, a nature trail, an outdoor amphitheatre and a remote control raceway!

Mill Creek Lake—This park, considered by many residents to be the most scenic, rests on a 190 acre watershed lake that is open for fishing only (no gasoline powered boats allowed). It consists of a boat ramp, picnic tables and grills, play area for children and restroom facilities.

Monacan Park—located on the scenic and historic James River, offers a boat ramp and small dock for boat access to the river, a covered picnic pavilion and picnic area, a play area for children and restroom facilities.

Stonehouse Lake Park—This park rests on a beautiful 41 acre Watershed lake and is open for fishing only. There is a boat ramp providing access into the lake (no gasoline powered boats allowed). A covered picnic pavilion, picnic tables and grills, a play area for children, and restroom facilities makes this park an attractive setting for family/group picnics and activities.

Thrashers Lake Park—Located in the Temperance area of the county, this park rests on an attractive 36 acre watershed lake open for fishing only. It consists of a boat ramp (no gasoline powered boats allowed) picnic tables and grills, a play area for children and restroom facilities.

Appomattox County

Appomattox Recreational Park—Plans are underway for the Appomattox Recreational Park. The complex includes ball fields, frisbee golf course, hiking trails, picnic areas, and an amphitheater.

Paradise Lake Family Campground—Paradise Lake Family Campground offers a lake for fishing and swimming, campsites, picnic areas and a game room.

Bedford City

City Lake—Located on Lake Drive, this 4-acre park features a small lake for fishing, quiet woods and picnic tables.

City Plaza—Located in the center of the City on Main Street, City Park provides benches for relaxation and pleasant viewing of the Historic District. Many downtown events are held here.

Edmund Street Park—This 6.5-acre park features playground equipment, picnic tables, tennis and basketball courts, gardens, horseshoes, a picnic shelter and large open play area.

Greenwood Park—Located at the intersection of Greenwood Street and Quarles Street, this 3-acre park provides picnic tables, basketball courts, playground equipment and an open play area.

Liberty Lake Park—Liberty Lake Park is comprised of 60 acres and features three developed playgrounds, a stocked fishing lake, fishing docks, three ball fields, three lighted tennis courts, state-of-the-art skateboard pod, fenced basketball courts, a roller-skating and walking loop, five picnic shelters, two concessions stands, vending machines, racquetball court and a nature trails facility featuring a paved handicapped accessible trail. Public restrooms and large open play areas are available.

Orange Street Park—This 2-acre ball field located on Orange Street is home for girls softball.

Poplar Park—The 1.5-acre park on Grand Arbre Drive is home to the largest Yellow Poplar tree in the United States and the largest tree in Virginia. The park features picnic tables and benches.

Reynolds Park—This 5.5-acre park on East Main Street features walking trails, gazebos and gardens.

The Wharton Garden—The Wharton Garden is adjacent to the Bedford Central Library and the Wharton House. Encompassing two historic structures, it consists of perennial and shrub borders, annual beds, a gazebo, brick walks and terraces and a mature boxwood maze.

Bedford County

The Forest Jump Park—The Forest Jump Park offers four soccer fields, a football field and five baseball fields. Concessions, a picnic area and large playground are also on site.

Moneta Park—Moneta Park stretches over 119-acres, and offers athletic fields, outdoor courts, walking and bike trails, picnic shelters, and other leisure amenities.

Campbell County

Brookneal Recreation Park—Brookneal Recreation Park sits on 28 acres and has three ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, playground equipment and shelters. There is also a swimming pool and a golf course available for the public.

Long Island Park—Long Island Park, which is a 60 acre park provides three picnic shelters, a one-mile nature trail along the river, a public boat ramp and open spaces for play. It is a popular location for family and church outings.

Shreve Park—Shreve Park has a playground, picnic pavilion and an amphitheatre on its 17 acres.

The S. R. Bryant, Jr. Memorial Way—The S. R. Bryant, Jr. Memorial Way is a 13 acre neighborhood park that is ideal for leisure activities such as walks, picnics and sports for neighborhood residents.

Staunton Riverfront Park—This 21 acre facility has two basketball courts, two baseball/softball fields, a soccer field, two volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, an open play area, two picnic pavilions, and playground equipment. There is also a boat ramp for access to the river.

 

Lynchburg

Black Water Creek Athletic Area—This 19.5 acre park offers a multi-purpose lighted field that accommodates football, softball, baseball or soccer. A picnic shelter is also available.

Fort Avenue Park—This half acre park offers three picnic tables and a grill, plus a water fountain, full basketball court and updated playground equipment, this completely fenced neighborhood park is a popular spot for residents of the neighborhood.

Hollins Mill Park—This three-acre site provides large shade trees, a lush open field and wonderful views of Blackwater Creek and historic Hollins Mill dam in the background. Picnic tables and grills are handicapped accessible.

Jefferson Park—This 23 acre park is filled with playground equipment, a ball field, two tennis courts and a basketball court are all located near the neighborhood center, which provides programming for seniors as well as an after-school and summer program for city children. The picnic shelter accommodates 80 people.

Miller Park—Miller Park is 37 acres and has a public swimming pool. Two picnic shelters are available and can be rented for special occasions. Miller Park is also home to an Aviary.

Peaks View Park—Peaks View Park is 250 acres and has three lighted tennis courts, seven multi-purpose fields (soccer, football, softball, baseball,) volleyball courts, a basketball court, mountain bike trails and a disc golf course. This park is a popular place to walk the dog or have a picnic.

Perrymont Park—Perrymont Park is located adjacent to Perrymont Elementary school. This 16 acre park includes three tennis courts and two ball fields.

Riverfront Festival Park Riverfront Park—Riverfront Festival Park Riverfront Park is located adjacent to the James River, and includes a large open field suitable for festivals and other special events. The park has a trail that connects to Percival's Island and the flat, level ground near the river is ideal for an easy stroll or bike ride.

Riverside Park—Riverside Park is 47 acres and one of the oldest parks in the area. There are picnic tables and gazebos as well as tennis and basketball courts and extensive playground equipment.

Sandusky Park—Sandusky Park provides 17 acres of beautiful scenery. This is a great park to have a picnic to take a stroll along the Blackwater Creek.

Younger Park—Younger Park has a basketball court and two picnic tables and grills in its five acres.
