Governor's School for Science & Technology

The mission of the Central Virginia Governor’s Schools for Science and Technology, a dynamic educational community exploring the connections between mathematics, science and, technology, is to develop leaders who posses the research and technical skills, the global perspective and the vision needed to address the challenges of a rapidly changing society.

The Governor’s school provides unique opportunities and experiences for students in the 11th and 12th grades. The students participate in research studies and improve their technical skills all in an environment which fosters independent learning. Other experiences which expose students to the application of science, mathematics and technology, include field studies, trips and telecommunications. Many students are offered internships at local companies and some are even offered jobs right after graduating.

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S., including Virginia, and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Summer Youth Programs

Blue Kiwi—Blue Kiwi (Kids in the Workforce Institute) is a one-week summer entrepreneurship program where kids learn how to start their own business. The program is available in Altavista, Appomattox, Bedford and in Lynchburg to kids ages 8 – 12.

Camp Meadowlark—Camp Meadowlark is a four week summer day camp for children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental retardation. Swimming, dancing, indoor and outdoor games, music along with talent show are all part of the fun. The Arc’s Camp Meadowlark enables children to have a summer camp experience that they will long remember.Camp CHILD is a four week academic skill maintenance program with camp-like exploratory activities for children ages 6 – 13 who have been identified as having a specific learning disability.

Summer Academies—CVCC offers Summer Academies which allows middle school students the ability to work on exciting projects in career areas including information technology, health technologies, advanced manufacturing, building trades, nuclear technologies, and police science. Students interested in healthcare careers can learn CPR and earn their Red Cross cards. The "Women in Engineering and Technologies" group can learn to build solar cars. And, future nuclear technicians can donn yellow protective suits and experience what it's like to be a robotics engineer. The Summer Academies are funded in part by a National Science Foundation Grant.
