A Secure Community
Businesses
and residents in Region 2000 enjoy the added security of outstanding fire
and police protections. In fact, the Insurance Services Office (ISO) has ranked
the firefighting resources in the City of Lynchburg to be in the top five
across the entire state. (The ISO rating system is well respected by both
private and public entities throughout the nation, and actually impacts the
insurance rates of homes and businesses in the City.)
Further, in 1989, Lynchburg’s police department became a fully accredited organization, and every three years since, LPD has sought – and earned – re-accreditation to ensure the department follows best practices in the law enforcement field.
Bedford County's Sheriffs office has received national attention for the successes of its groundbreaking Internet crimes unit, “Operation Blue Ridge Thunder.” NBA great Shaquille O’Neal serves as national spokesman for the Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and is an honorary deputy of the Department.
Civic Organizations
One would be hard pressed to find a more caring community than Central Virginia. The compassion for our neighbors is intertwined throughout the business community, church community and on our own streets. Most local companies encourage their work force to be involved in civic organizations and understand the positive impact it has on the community as a whole. Often times, employers find their staff more productive when they allow them time to volunteer.
The Rotary Club—In early 2005, the Rotary Club celebrated its 100 year anniversary of worldwide humanitarian service. Active in Central Virginia, the Rotary Club is an organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world.
The Kiwanis Club—The Kiwanis Club has been serving the Central Virginia community since 1920. The primary purpose of the club is to improve the community and serve its youth. That includes helping to finance and construct children's playgrounds and camps; beautifying our community; bringing fun to children via the Teddy Bear Parade; and building confidence, character, and interpersonal skills, providing recognition, and teaching leadership.
The Junior League of Lynchburg—The Junior League of Lynchburg is an organization of women in Central Virginia committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the actions of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively education and charitable. Their commitment to these goals has remained constant. Since 1927, they have trained over a thousand women dedicated to volunteerism in the areas of education, health issues, and civic awareness. The League has been an advocate for a variety of causes vital to the residents of Lynchburg and its surrounding communities.
Garden Clubs, Lions Clubs, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, The Exchange Club, Girl Scouts, Loyal Order of Moose, Woodmen of the World, American Legion, and Junior Women’s Club are also active throughout the region.
